Croatia

Croatia lies close to the boundaries of the Ottoman-Habsburg Wars. After the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476, the Eastern Byzantine Empire lasted till 1453 when it fell to the Ottomans. Various Kingdoms rose from the ruins of the West. Both Mongol and Muslim Empires stretched deep into Europe. Although inhabited since prehistoric time, there are competing theories of where the Croats who settled somewhere between the 6th and 9th century came from. Empire building also leads to people scattering. One theory connects the people to the Slavic speakers of the North, and another suggests Iranian origin. The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991-1995. Croatia was the last country to join the European Union on 1 July 2013 as the 28th member state.
