Honesty is not opening the door. Honesty is cumulative. It is multiple conversations, interactions, and moments of silence. Honesty is time spent together. Words are a blunt hack at the truth. As they come out of our mouths, we ourselves are hearing them for the first time. They are not even necessarily a response to the questions being asked, or situation being experienced. Words and emotions can be an eruption of built up reactions to years of seemingly unrelated events. Any story we tell ourselves to explain things is a simplification. It is always more complicated than that. Start with kindness, respect, and patience. Add time.
