Hungary

We were wanderers before we could write about our wanderings. Before we conquered the seas, the land was an open highway. The Eurasian Steppes are a grass highway, from the Black Sea of Ukraine, reaching almost all the way to the Pacific. The Huns returned West after maybe 2000 years of going East, and coming back. The story of what happened over that time is very murky. They came back warriors, forcing migrations in lands that had been held at times by Celts, Romans, Slavs, Gepids and Avars. Contributing to the fall of the Roman Empire. They were a confederation of warrior bands, keen to take on new fighters who would add to their force. So 'the Huns' were more an empire of people than a specific closed group. Hungarian is one of 24 official languages of the European Union, but like Finnish and Estonian, it belongs to the Uralic family. Hungarians refer to themselves as Magyar - a name taken from one of the seven semi-nomadic Hungarian tribes.
