I guess when you watch a movie with someone who is watching it for the second time, you should expect that it should be good.
Well... in the lucky packet that is the Cinema Nouveau, Juno is certainly the shiney toy.
Wow. I have always said I like European movies more than American stuff, because they make you laugh through life experiences rather than through toilet scenes that make you cringe. Juno is exactly that. Without spoiling it, it is the story of a teenage pregnancy and the girls interactions with her family, her friends and the future parents of her unborn child.
The soundtrack is also pretty cool... but the writing is awesome. Not at all surprised that it got the academy nominations that it did.
On a different note... Iron Man is also worth watching. And if you think the fact that I enjoyed a comic book hero movie detracts from the value of the recommendation of Juno... your loss.

Man, I forgot, I'm supposed to murder you when I see you.
Oh well, next time...
The sentence should have been extended to say... this was American.
And it is a broad generalisation...
But hey, whatever. Bring it on...
You're a statistician, break it down for me. how many movies do you watch? how many are american. how many are pretty clear about cringe content. What percentage of hollywood movies make it here? what percantage of European movies do? What impact does that have on selection effects?
I know you say its a generalisation, but considering that we're pretty close in movie compatibility, I just don't think it reflects reality much.
You are correct. Hollywood is responsible for the large majority of movies I enjoy.
I don't get to see lots of European flicks. I think I would like to see more. There are probably a lot of bad ones. On average they are probably worse.
The `generalisation' is probably less of a `generalisation' and more of a gut feeling that I have thurally enjoyed movies such as
Run Lola Run
Lessons in Italian For Beginners
Life is Beautiful
The Tiger in the Snow
I don't tend to watch the `Jackass' and 'The heartbreak Kid' versions of European movies... I am sure they are there.
I just look forward to the day that we get a much wider variety of cultures putting forward movies of high quality.
The point I was trying to make was that I enjoyed Juno... which was `American' but reminded me of the reasons I enjoyed the movies I mentioned above.
