We talk with words and body language. We also listen actively. This includes nods and grunts to indicate approval or otherwise of what we hear. Disagreement normally indicates an interruption and so to finish listening to someone or at least give them a chance to finish a thought, often you need to look somewhat like you 'agree'. This can be awkward if you don't really know a person well enough to launch into debating every point, or in truth, don't want to. This is fine if it is just a two way conversation, but we also read the body language of other listeners. So if you are in a group, and someone says something controversial - we are conscious of others responses. On Twitter this extends further. When 'retweeting', many put disclaimers that a retweet is not an endorsement - but the casual user is going to assume it is. It is a little like being in a room when someone makes a racist or sexist comment. Are you supposed to respond, or just 'retweet' with the implied 'what an idiot' - no comment needed?
