I live in Seoul, South Korea, which at only 57km from the border with the ironically
named Democratic People’s Republic of (North) Korea is close enough to make me
nervous. But it’s also home to 28,000 US military personnel, which makes me even
more nervous. South Korea is famous for the Korean wave of culture (hallyu), which
is a torrent of manufactured, lookalike boy/girl bands and sappy soap operas
breaking like a tsunami of shite all over Asia, and spreading inexorably to the rest of
the world. As a result, Koreans are widely regarded as the best looking people in
Asia, but it’s impossible to tell if this is true, because Korea also leads the world in
cosmetic surgery.
