Ethiopia was the only country to defeat a colonial power and retain it's sovereignty during the late 19th Century 'Scramble for Africa'. Liberia started as a settlement for freed American slaves and maintained its independence during the European Colonial Era. Many African countries adopted variations of the Green, Yellow and Red colours, and the star emblem of the Ethiopian flag when they declared independence. Ethiopia has some of the oldest evidence for anatomically modern humans, and is widely considered where we all set out from in the first place. Emperor Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari) led Ethiopia from 1916-1974.
