There is an imbalance of power between most businesses, and their employees. If someone works for just one company, it is the equivalent of a company built around just one person. Most businesses aim to institutionalise. Institutions have lives beyond the individuals that built them. They build in processes and redundancy. If someone leaves, it is a problem, but not the end of the world. It can be planned for. People should plan for lives beyond their institutions. For most of us, changing jobs is a much bigger deal for us than for the company. People (anybody and everybody) can be replaced. Portfolio Work is the idea of individuals treating businesses like businesses treat individuals. Have a few of them. Instead of bosses, you get clients.
