I
have become far less willing to invest in the early stages of something if I am
not an owner. I worked at three companies as an employee. All for less than five
years. The problem with that is that contributions compound in the same way as
Capital. A successful businessman I know said it took him seven years to earn
what he was earning as an employee when he started his own thing. Not many
people stay at companies for seven years anymore. If you aren’t an owner, is it
worth putting the effort in? As a long-term investor, I am not that interested
in the first five years, if they can’t lead to the next five years. What you do
today almost doesn’t matter if it isn’t connected to tomorrow. The domino
effect of compounding will always favour builders over starters. Building an
Engine is a substitute way of taking ownership of your effort. Of connecting
the days. Ideally, we would all be owners of the things we are building. “Act
as if you are an owner” is a terrible substitute for “Be an Owner”.
