A salary is similar to a bond. A fixed amount for Capital working for
someone else. The advantage of this is the ability to plan. You know in advance
how much is coming in, and so you can commit to expenses. Fixed expenses like
mortgage payments, school fees, food, electricity, water, gym contracts, subscriptions
and other amounts that drip off every month. Small Businesses are more brutal.
No client? No pay. Holiday, sick leave or emergency? No pay. Client taking time
to pay? no pay. If there is no work, it is a lot to expect people to start
businesses with no Capital and no certainty. It isn’t just a question of coming
up with a good idea. Particularly if you want someone to be a job creator.
Taking on additional people and giving them the certainty to be able to plan,
when a business is still learning to walk. While we are constrained in funding
the basics of life, the majority of our creativity will be restrained. It is
only when we have built endurance and resilience, that we can relax enough to
lean towards the edges of what is possible.
