The French word for Fate is Sort. The way we choose what we want to “be”
as we leave school, means our careers end up defining us. “Meritocracy” means
the lifestyle we then get is determined by the financial value our being adds
to society. Unless we get a hand from the Bank of Mom and Dad. In a hand-to-mouth
world where we spend what we earn, our salary becomes our price. Price is not
Value. Salary is not Worth. You are not your job. What we should be doing at
school is recognising that we need to generate Capital to finance our lives,
but our lifestyle can be separate from that. It doesn’t have to get fancier as
we earn more. You aren’t a better person for earning more. Detaching your
lifestyle from your work is the key. Not all good ideas are good business
ideas. Not everything you believe adds value will make it through the “how to
make money” filter. However, if the money problem is sorted, you can choose a
new filter. That starts with controlling your lifestyle.
