Here is the full text of `Obama's Race Speech'
I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible.
Really, wow, America is so unique... thats amazing.
This time we want to talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of every race, and the homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of life. This time we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn't look like you might take your job; it's that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit.
Most of the time I was enjoying the speech, but lines like this made me hesitate. Sounds a lot like our very own `jobs and houses for all' election posters.
All in all though, I thought it was a pretty good response to the Reverend Wright issue. Seems the Right have decided Hillary's goose is cooked and it is time to start attacking Obama.
What I do find fascinating is the level of interaction. Yes, some of the blatant politicking leaves you quesie, but we don't have anything close to this in South Africa. Zuma v Mbeki in Polokwane involved very few of us.
I am torn between the idea of wanting to be more involved, and the idea that Government is just a bad idea anyway.
Stuart doesn't like my belief that a `Big Picture' is necessary. I am open to being convinced otherwise, but I do think Great Leaders & Thinkers can make quicker, better change, BUT they can also do a lot of harm if they are `Great' at what they do in a negative way.
The unlikelihood that a leader will be `Great' and not just another popular politician makes me tend towards the idea of reduced Government involvement (not as ideal but as pragmatic)

I'm not sure I get this.
I'm all for great leaders. I have political heroes who I think used their power to make the world, and the future, better. I just doubt that we'd agree much on who those people are, and what counts as something great worth doing.
I have a grand vision for society that I'd like leaders to pursue right now in fact.
I still want to know what kind of goals you'd like like leaders to achieve. what counts as better?
I am still figuring that out. I will try put some thoughts together and write a post but I tend to change my mind so often now days, I definitely wouldn't make a good politician.

Watch the street polls. Look for green, black and yellow.
Not sure he actually believes this stuff, or he is trying to get votes. Obviously he would be silly not to try and get votes.
see 'make it stop, please make it stop'
from Megan McArdle, the exact same paragraph (independently of me... as in I didn't copy her) made her raise her eyebrow
The ANC is making promises it wont keep but Obama is just whining. I don't understand why they're similar.
