Technology in the workplace

Today blogspot and gmail chat were blocked at my work.

I can partly understand but it still bothers me. If you have the right incentives in place based on output, then people who wither there hours away unproductively will not get as much compensation.

Email, Cellphones, Social Networking, Blogs, Mobile Internet, Blackberry, and so much more have the ability to completely change the way we work. Working from home, for example, is not only possible, but possibly far more cost efficient for companies and more than likely beneficial for employee wellbeing too.

The problem is that most people (a guess) only work under supervision and get away with as much as they can. They are not interested in doing a good job, they just want to do a job.

This is very frustrating because while these tools have the potential to do amazing things, for most people they are just distractions and ways of pretending not to work.

I can't help but feel though that if we were incentivized properly, then this wouldn't be a problem.
