Thanks to my decision to put `Satanic Verses' aside, I was able to pick up `Blink'. After reading `The Tipping Point', also by Gladwell, in October last year, I had been patiently waiting for `Blink'. Every time I walked past a book store, I would check out the business book section.
Then Stuart told me he had seen it in the Psychology section. Hmmm... very chuffed to find it, but a little annoyed that I had been looking it the wrong section for so long. It makes you think though that classifying of books, music, movies etc. should be revisited now that we have easier ways to access and assess information. Maybe books should be put in sections like, people who read books like you liked these books... something like Amazon does. Sort by personality profiles or preferences. A couple of art books, some business books, a philosophy book or two and fiction all in the same section... why not?
Anyway, back to the book.
It was great. Probably prefered `The Tipping Point', but I like the bringing together of various stories to illustrate the central point. `Blink' is all about our inate ability to make quick high-quality decisions, that we can't explain. It also looks at why we also sometimes make poor decisions when forced to make them quickly, and how prejudices can shine through.
I also like the `cross-discipline' nature of the book. Not sure how to classify Gladwell, and I guess this is why I couldn't find the book.
