Performance Art

Zhang Huan

Yesterday I went to the Vacouver Art Gallery. They made no attempt to pack art pieces into small spaces, everything was well spread out and allowed to breathe.

There were a fair splattering of pieces that left me cold... but it was worth it just to see Zhang Huan's stuff.

Performance Art always risks coming across as incredibly pretentious, and maybe lots of people will think that Huan's stuff does that. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Besides the sculptural pieces, there were also photos and films of performance pieces. One of the ones I enjoyed showed a series of portraits taken over a day where he let Chineese Calligraphers write classic poetry on his face in black ink. As the day progressed and the sun set, so his face became more and more completely covered in ink.

Oh, by the way... Vancouver is just amazing.
