Johannesburg (Thabani)

In 1886 gold was discovered in South Africa and Johannesburg has since became the largest city. Here all 11 South African languages are active and yet we all know how to understand each other. The people are the biggest commodity the city has to offer. They make you forget there is no ocean here. It is the creativity hub of the southern region of Africa. If you can’t make it here, you won’t make it anywhere. The infrastructure bears testimony to the history of this country. The fading colonial styled city buildings. The township dwellings. The gold mines. The striving suburbs and the new obsession with shopping malls.

We studied and lived together in Smuts Hall at the University of Cape Town.
Thabani now works as a Freelance Assistant Director.
