Romania

The River Danube starts in Germany and flows through 10 countries to empty in Romania's Danube Delta. The oldest known remains of Homo Sapiens in Europe were found in "the cave with bones" dating to 40,000 years ago. The earliest wanderers from our common African descent would have been far from home. The earliest known salt works are found near the village of Lunca (about 6000 years old). Romania gained independence from the rule of the Austro-Hungarian, then Ottoman Empire in 1877. After the World Wars, they fell under direct USSR control until Ceaușescu started acting independently. After his fall in 1989, Romania moved toward Democracy and became a full member of the EU in 2007.
