Hand-to-mouth living enforces external
discipline. You can only spend what you have. If you get paid once a month, and
run out, you have to wait till the next pay-check. Living off Capital requires
internalised discipline. A long-term sustainability perspective. Think of the Tropical
rainforests. The “lungs of the planet”. We can cut them down and sell the wood,
if we are only thinking about our lives. Living off Capital requires a “sustainable
drawdown”. You have to spend less than is made, despite there being more “available”.
This requires a fundamental shift from a consumer mindset, to us becoming
custodians.
