Money making requires a container. A way to have a degree of control
over supply and demand. This adds a level of existential angst. It is not just
about if what you are doing is valuable. It is also about you. Are you
necessary to solve the problem? We all have to eat, and so part of making money
requires story-telling and asymmetries of information. Knowing what you do, would
you hire you? Because you have a (no escape hatch) relationship with you, or
because you are the “best”? A person who believes in meritocracy still has to
have a healthy bias towards themselves. How many people apply the same selection
criteria to themselves as to others? “Sorry, there are other people better than
me. Here is my resignation letter.” As the world gets fairer, containers will
be harder. Perfect transparency. Perfect replicability. Zero transaction costs.
In that world, relationships will trump transactions.
